by Andrew Bernstein
Many of us have had the distressing experience of searching for a sight of human stature in the field of literature, but finding only stories about alcoholics, neurotics or hapless victims. We are familiar with the great writers of the Romantic school. But after hungrily devouring the works of Hugo, Dostoyevsky, Rand, Rostand, Dumas, et al., we often do not know where to turn. In a literary culture permeated with anti-heroes, where does a lover of man look to find spiritual sustenance?
This is the problem that this course is designed to solve. Dr. Bernstein will analyze serious, man-revering works of fiction; including both writings that were celebrated in the past (such as Lawrence's and Lee's superb Inherit the Wind) and ones that were and are largely unknown (e.g., Dorothy Canfield Fisher's great Heyday of the Blood.) This course is a must for any hero-worshipper trapped in modern culture.
